Greetings Friends and Colleagues:
Welcome! On behalf of the IUB Chapter of The American Association of University Professors (IUB AAUP), it gives me great pleasure to introduce our Officers and Executive Committee members for AY 2025-26.
President: David McDonald
Vice President: Maria Bucur
Treasurer: nicholae cline
Secretary: Chris Sapp
Executive Committee Members: Sofiya Asher, Purnima Bose, Andy Bruno, John Carini, Israel Herrera, Diane Hershel, Moira Marsh, Ben Robinson, Russ Skiba, and Alex Tanford.
This is a new executive committee composed of colleagues committed to returning shared governance to the Bloomington campus.
It goes without saying that Indiana University is currently in crisis. Just in the last year we have witnessed:
- The loss of freedom of speech on campus (UA-10)
- The loss of faculty governance (HEA 1001)
- The Governor’s take-over of the Board of Trustees (HEA 1001)
- The Board’s creation of new policies for dismissal, financial exigency, and event management
- The disenfranchisement of emeritus faculty (HEA 1001)
- The loss of 116 degrees at IUB (HEA 1001)
- The imposition of 5-year post-tenure reviews of “viewpoint diversity”; productivity; and “workforce alignment” (SEA 202; HEA 1001; SEA 448)
- A $100 Mil cut in operating budget
- A 10% reduction in the University contributions to faculty retirement funds
The Whitten Administration has not consulted with faculty in a meaningful way about the implementation of this legislation. Indeed, it has not been transparent about its communications with the legislature and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE). We have no way of knowing whether the Whitten Administration initiated, collaborated, or challenged the incursion of state government into curricular matters and workplace norms. We believe this is unacceptable.
But, unless faculty are willing to collectively organize their opposition, attacks on IU faculty will continue. It is only through collective organizing that we can return shared governance to IU.
Join us at any of these upcoming events, to find out how you can get involved:
- 9/5 4:00-7:00 PM Welcome Reception @ The Bishop (123 S Walnut St.)
- 9/18 4:30-6:00 General Membership Meeting @ Ballantine Hall 008
In solidarity,
David A. McDonald, President
IUB AAUP
