Dear Chancellor Reingold and Provost Ciorciari,
The Executive Committee of the Indiana University Bloomington Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) would like to begin by acknowledging that during the Spring 2026 semester we were able to come to a successful agreement with campus administration in regard to the search for a new provost. Namely, we requested that non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) not be required for members of the search committee and that the incoming president of the Bloomington Faculty Council (BFC) be made a member of the committee. We appreciate that these conditions were met.
In the spirit of a collaborative and trustful relationship between members of the AAUP and campus administration, the Executive Committee of the chapter makes the following requests of chancellor and provost of Indiana University Bloomington and asks for a response to these requests by October 19, 2026. These requests reflect the chapter’s priorities for the current academic year around shared governance, academic freedom, and financial accountability.
Supporting Faculty Governance:
- We ask that Indiana University Bloomington commit to following its own policies and procedures.
- We ask that the comment period for new and revised policies be extended from 10 business days to 30 days.
- We ask that at least 50% of the members of the Campus Policy Committee come from current full-time faculty members and be approved by the Bloomington Faculty Council.
- We ask that all changes to policies related to academic and budgetary matters as well as employee benefits be routed through the appropriate BFC committees for consultation with faculty sufficiently prior to their enactment and implementation.
Academic Freedom to Teach and Learn:
- We ask that Indiana University Bloomington end the practice of allowing for SEA 202 complaints by anonymous parties and beyond students in specific courses.
- We ask for the creation of a new policy that better protects free speech for students and faculty in the classroom.
- We ask that data be released about how many SEA 202 complaints there have been and how the university has handled them.
Financial Accountability:
- We ask that the university increase the percentage of resources going to its academic mission, including instructors, instruction, and educational infrastructure such as classroom technology.
- We ask that the university restore cuts to benefits that have been based on claims of financial constraints, such as the reduction of retirement benefits in 2025.
- We ask for an improvement in financial transparency on campus, including through supplying and publicly reporting campus-level data and assuring the public release of the data provided to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
Sincerely,
Indiana University Bloomington AAUP (IUB-AAUP) Executive Committee
